Weekend Review

Just an update-ito for ustedes before Thursday:

Well there we are then.

The Superclasico is over and it’s Boca who are victorious. In all my years of football I couldn’t imagine seeing a goalkeeper do what Carizzo did for the first goal, it looked almost as if he had a seizure whilst trying to catch a corner and somehow parried it into his own net from 4 yards out.

The second was the romantic’s dream, Martin Palermo, el Titan, San Martín, San Palermo, whatever you call him. In his last ever Superclasico he looped a header over the stranded keeper in a scrappy but meaningful goal.

Of course, we got the obligatory scrap at the end. The perennial controversy as Matias Almeyda incited the home crowd by kissing La Banda Roja but this result plunged River back into the relegation picture.

Elsewhere, Independiente pulled themselves away from such danger by beating Olimpo. Unbelievably, reigning champs Estudiantes are closer to the bottom 3 than the top after a disappointing draw at home to Tigre (with Boludo favourite Stracqualursi playing).

Main story away from the La Bombonera though, was Velez losing to Lanús. Now make no mistake, Lanús are a bloody decent side. So bloody decent they’d be top if the league was only calculated on home results, and they’ve got an outside tilt at the title now.

Godoy Cruz, whose spectacular counter-attacking football of late has wowed the Boludo, are now one point off Velez and could win an unlikely trophy with Velez distracted by Copa Libertadores commitments.
